The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which entered into force in 1997, is a landmark international treaty aimed at eliminating chemical weapons worldwide. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is responsible for monitoring and ensuring compliance with this treaty, which has the support of 193 member states.
India’s Leadership and Commitment
As an original signatory, India has remained a proactive and committed participant in the CWC. The National Authority Chemical Weapons Convention (NACWC), the official Indian body for implementing the CWC, plays a crucial role in ensuring the country’s adherence to its treaty obligations. The NACWC not only oversees domestic compliance but also supports international cooperation.
In a significant step reflecting India’s global outreach, the NACWC recently mentored Kenya’s National Authority under the OPCW’s Mentorship/Partnership Programme. This initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of national authorities across the world by sharing knowledge and offering strategic guidance to enhance the implementation of the CWC.
India Hosts Key Regional Meeting
Reinforcing its leadership role in Asia, India recently hosted the 23rd Regional Meeting of National Authorities for States Parties in Asia, organized by the OPCW. The NACWC hosted the high-level event in New Delhi.
The important gathering brought together 38 delegates from 24 countries, including major regional powers such as Australia, China, and Japan. Officials from the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific and the OPCW also participated.
Advancing Dialogue and Regional Cooperation
The discussions at the meeting centered on strengthening legislative frameworks and enhancing chemical safety protocols. They also focused on expanding the role of industry stakeholders in supporting the CWC. Participants exchanged experiences, shared challenges, and explored opportunities to build a safer, more compliant chemical ecosystem across the region.
