Recycled PET Capacity in India Set to Reach 1.5 Lakh MTPA

The Association of PET Recyclers (APR) Bharat expressed optimism and renewed confidence on after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) granted authorizations to six recycled PET (r-PET) units across the country. With these approvals, the industry now has a combined authorized capacity of 1.5 lakh metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) to produce food-grade r-PET for use in packaging by branded beverage companies. APR Bharat said that FSSAI is currently reviewing additional capacity—nearly equal in volume—and is likely to authorize it soon.

Swift Response to Industry Concerns

The progress comes in the wake of recent concerns raised by APR Bharat about the potential financial strain on r-PET manufacturers due to delays in the authorization process. Responding to these appeals, FSSAI has engaged in continuous dialogue with the industry and has accelerated the approval process. “In the last 15 days alone, six authorizations have been issued. This quick turnaround has been vital,” said Shailendra Singh, Director General, APR Bharat.

Risk of Bankruptcy Averted

The Association had earlier warned that prolonged delays in granting FSSAI authorizations could push many manufacturers, who have already invested heavily, toward bankruptcy. The industry has invested an estimated ₹7,500–8,000 crore to establish a production capacity of around 4 lakh MTPA for food-grade r-PET. These factories use state-of-the-art technology and follow international safety standards, including those set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Aligning with National Goals on Sustainability

Singh lauded FSSAI’s swift action and the supportive role played by top officials in ensuring timely approvals. “This move is not only timely but also critical to helping beverage manufacturers meet regulatory guidelines that mandate 30% recycled content in PET packaging bottles,” he noted. He further emphasized that the development aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a circular economy.

Economic and Social Impact

Beyond environmental benefits, the r-PET sector holds promise for substantial job creation. The industry expects to generate over 10,000 new jobs and support the livelihoods of more than two million rag pickers who collect post-consumer PET bottles for recycling. As per the press release, as India strengthens its circular economy efforts, these FSSAI approvals mark a critical milestone in promoting sustainability, safeguarding investments, and empowering waste management communities.
