Domestic Natural Gas Production Surges

During the first half of 2023, India experienced a notable uptick of around four percent in its domestic natural gas production, primarily attributed to a substantial increase in production from production sharing contract/joint venture (PSC/JV) fields.

The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) disclosed the findings in its Ready Reckoner H1 edition, providing comprehensive energy statistics for the period spanning April to September 2023. The report stated that the domestic gross production of natural gas reached 17,879 million metric standard cubic meters (MMSCM), showcasing a growth from 17,184 MMSCM during the same timeframe in the previous year.

On the import front, the country witnessed a significant surge in the volume of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, escalating from 13,680 MMSCM in April-September 2022 to 15,416 MMSCM in the corresponding period of 2023. However, in terms of monetary value, LNG imports registered a decrease of approximately 31.2%, dropping from $9.43 billion to $6.49 billion.

As reported by ETEnergyworld.com, the report also underscored the initiation of operations at the Dhamra LNG terminal, contributing to an augmentation of India’s total LNG capacity to 47.7 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA). Notably, the capacity utilisation at these terminals exhibited significant variations, with the Mundra LNG Terminal operating at approximately 12.5% capacity and the Dahej LNG terminal at about 94.31%.
