India is taking significant steps to increase approximately 5.8 million tons of green ammonia manufacturing capacity in various regions, announced Union Power and new and Renewable Energy Minister R K Singh. The move reflects India’s strong commitment to decarbonising its economy.

Singh emphasised that the government plans to implement mandates across different departments to promote the adoption of green hydrogen and green ammonia. These green alternatives have the potential for applications in sectors such as fertilisers and refining, ultimately reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

As reported by ETEnergyworld.com, Singh expressed his confidence that India will not only meet, but exceed its decarbonisation targets for 2030. Following the commitment made at the Glasgow Climate Summit to achieve 50% of India’s total capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030, Singh believes that the country is poised to reach a more ambitious target of 65%. Additionally, India is expected to surpass its goal of reducing emission intensity by 45% within the same timeframe.

Singh commented, “Our per capita emissions are around one third of the global average, whereas developed countries typically emit three to four times the world average. Yet, we are steadfast in our commitment to fight climate change. With our existing non-fossil-fuel capacity at around 186 GW, of which approximately 179 GW is renewable, we aim to add 50 GW of renewable capacity annually, targeting 500 GW by 2030”.
